# Free Sentence Counter and Sentence Length Checker

**A sentence counter measures how many sentence segments appear in a piece of text.** This free sentence counter also reports total words, average words per sentence, shortest and longest sentence lengths, sentences over 25 words, paragraphs, and characters.

Your text is processed in your browser. The counter does not upload or save what you paste, and no account is required. Add an optional sentence target when a summary, script, exercise, or publishing brief requires a particular number of sentences.

To get a sentence count, paste or type the passage and read the live
**Sentences** total. The counter uses locale-aware sentence segmentation when
the browser supports it, then reports average, shortest, and longest sentence
lengths for review.

## Count Sentences Online

1. Paste a paragraph, article section, script, or other existing text into the box.
2. Read the live sentence and word totals.
3. Review average, shortest, and longest sentence lengths.
4. Add an optional target to track the number of sentences.
5. Copy the text when finished, or clear it to reset every measurement.

The counter updates locally in the current browser tab. It measures the text without rewriting, storing, or grading it.

## How the Sentence Counter Finds Boundaries

Sentence boundaries are more complicated than counting periods. A period can end a sentence, appear in an abbreviation, separate initials, or form part of a decimal. Questions and exclamations can use different punctuation across writing systems. Dialogue can place quotation marks after the closing punctuation.

The counter uses the browser's locale-aware `Intl.Segmenter` interface when available. The [ECMAScript Internationalization specification](https://tc39.es/ecma402/) defines that interface. Its sentence segmentation draws on Unicode boundary rules described by [Unicode Standard Annex #29](https://unicode.org/reports/tr29/).

Older browsers receive a punctuation-based fallback. Another editor may use a different Unicode version, language tailoring, abbreviation dictionary, or proprietary rule, so totals can differ.

## What the Sentence Statistics Mean

| Measurement | Calculation | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Sentences | Non-empty locale-aware sentence segments | Checking a sentence-based brief |
| Words | Word-like segments across the detected sentences | Relating sentence count to overall length |
| Average words | Total words divided by sentence count | Spotting a consistently dense or sparse passage |
| Shortest sentence | Lowest sentence word count | Finding very brief segments for review |
| Longest sentence | Highest sentence word count | Locating likely candidates for closer reading |
| Over 25 words | Sentences whose word count exceeds 25 | Applying a specific editorial review threshold |
| Paragraphs | Non-empty blocks separated by blank lines | Understanding document structure |
| Characters | Unicode code points including whitespace | Comparing sentence measures with raw length |

The tool does not declare a long sentence incorrect. A sentence may need extra words to state conditions, preserve evidence, define a term, or avoid ambiguity.

## Sentence Counter vs Word Counter

A [word counter](/free-tools/word-counter) answers how many words appear in the full passage. A sentence counter divides the passage into sentence segments and calculates length for each segment.

Use the word counter when a requirement is expressed in words, reading time, or speaking time. Use this page when you need sentence totals or sentence-length distribution. Both tools show supporting measurements, but their primary search tasks and result pages are distinct.

## Sentence Counter vs Paragraph Counter

A paragraph is a layout and idea-organization unit. A sentence is a grammatical or discourse unit marked by language and punctuation conventions. One paragraph can contain one sentence or many.

This tool reports paragraphs as context, but it does not own paragraph-counter intent. Paragraph-counter search results emphasize block separation and paragraph distribution. That remains a distinct future utility opportunity rather than another keyword added to this page.

## What Average Sentence Length Can—and Cannot—Tell You

Average sentence length is calculated as total words divided by detected sentences. It can reveal that a passage is dominated by long or short sentences, but it cannot prove clarity, quality, difficulty, or correctness.

Two texts can share the same average while having very different distributions. One may contain sentences of similar length; another may alternate between two-word statements and long technical explanations. Review the shortest and longest values beside the average.

Audience and purpose matter. Instructions often benefit from direct steps. Legal or scientific writing may need conditions and qualifications. Dialogue, marketing copy, and literary prose may intentionally vary rhythm.

## Using the Over-25-Words Measure

The over-25-words value is a review queue, not an error count. Current [GOV.UK clear-language guidance](https://guidance.publishing.service.gov.uk/writing-to-gov-uk-standards/writing-guidelines/clear-language/) recommends trying to split sentences over 25 words and keeping paragraphs to no more than five sentences for its own public-service audience.

That threshold is useful when you are writing comparable public-facing guidance. It is not a universal law for essays, contracts, research, fiction, or technical documentation.

For every sentence flagged:

1. Identify its central action or claim.
2. Check whether it contains two independent ideas.
3. Preserve qualifications, citations, names, numbers, and required terms.
4. Split only where the relationship remains clear.
5. Read the revision in context with the sentences around it.

Sometimes the best edit is a list, a new paragraph, or a defined term rather than two shorter sentences.

## Why Sentence Counts Differ

Different tools may disagree because of:

- abbreviations such as “Dr.” or “etc.”;
- initials and acronyms containing periods;
- decimal numbers and version strings;
- ellipses and repeated punctuation;
- headings or fragments without closing punctuation;
- quoted dialogue;
- emoji used as sentence endings;
- Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, or other punctuation conventions;
- browser and Unicode-version differences.

If a school, publisher, test, or submission portal names an authoritative editor, use that editor's final count. This page is designed for fast drafting and transparent length analysis.

## Sentence Counts for Common Workflows

### Summaries and short responses

Use the sentence target to monitor the requested range. Do not combine unrelated ideas merely to reduce the total, and do not split one idea into fragments merely to increase it.

### Scripts and presentations

Sentence totals do not predict delivery time. Pauses, emphasis, stage directions, slide changes, quotations, and audience interaction affect timing. Use the [word counter](/free-tools/word-counter) for a speaking-time estimate, then rehearse aloud.

### Articles and landing pages

Review the longest sentences where readers may need to act or make a decision. Preserve accurate product conditions, prices, limitations, and evidence while simplifying the structure.

### Academic and research writing

Do not remove citations, technical definitions, hedging, or methodological limits just to satisfy an average. Follow the institution's AI and editing policy and verify every revised claim.

### Multilingual content

Locale-aware segmentation supports more writing systems than a period-only rule. Language-specific editors may still apply tailored conventions that produce a different total.

## Privacy and Limitations

Counting occurs locally after the page loads. The sentence-counter script does not transmit the pasted text. Copy uses the browser clipboard where available, with a local selection fallback.

Device privacy still matters. Avoid confidential text on shared computers, during screen sharing, or in a browser with untrusted extensions. Clear the box and close the tab when finished.

The counter does not:

- identify or correct grammar;
- decide whether a fragment is intentional;
- score tone, readability, originality, or factual accuracy;
- guarantee the same count as another platform;
- rewrite long sentences automatically;
- determine whether a sentence is appropriate for its audience.

## When Counting Is Not Enough

Use the [sentence rewriter](/free-tools/sentence-rewriter) when an individual sentence needs a reviewable alternate version. Use the [paragraph rewriter](/free-tools/paragraph-rewriter) when relationships and flow across multiple sentences need attention.

Humanizer PRO accepts existing text and returns an editable revision. A free account supports up to 300 words per request. Compare the revision with the original and restore every changed fact, citation, quotation, name, number, or necessary qualification.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is this sentence counter free?

Yes. The sentence counter is free, requires no account, and processes text in the current browser tab.

### Does the sentence counter save my text?

No. The counter does not upload or save the supplied text. Clear it when finished, especially on a shared device.

### Does the tool count sentence fragments?

It counts non-empty segments identified by the browser's sentence-boundary rules. A heading or fragment may be counted even when it is not a complete grammatical sentence.

### How is average sentence length calculated?

The tool divides the total word-like segments by the number of detected sentences and displays one decimal place.

### Are sentences over 25 words wrong?

No. The total is a review aid based on one public-sector clear-language threshold. Purpose, audience, accuracy, and necessary detail determine whether a sentence should change.

### Why are abbreviations sometimes counted differently?

Editors can use different abbreviation dictionaries and segmentation rules. Locale, browser, punctuation, and Unicode version can also affect the boundary.

### Can I set a sentence target?

Yes. Enter a positive target to see sentences remaining, percentage progress, or how far the passage exceeds the target.

### Can the counter rewrite long sentences?

No. It measures without changing the text. If you choose to rewrite a sentence, use the sentence rewriter and compare the result carefully with the original.

## Count First, Then Review in Context

Use sentence totals and length distribution to locate passages worth reading again. Treat every number as a navigation aid—not a substitute for meaning, evidence, policy, or editorial judgment.
