Count Text Lines, Blank Lines, and Newline Breaks
Measure total, non-empty, and blank lines, newline breaks, words, characters, and line lengths without sending your text anywhere.

Total lines equal newline breaks plus one when text is present. A trailing newline creates a final blank line; soft visual wrapping does not.
Free Line Counter for Text and Newline Breaks
A line counter measures the text rows created by newline characters. This free line counter reports total lines, non-empty lines, blank lines, newline breaks, longest-line length, average characters per non-empty line, words, and characters.Your text is processed in your browser. The utility does not send or save what you paste, and no account is required. Use the optional target when a script, list, caption file, poem draft, data sample, or publishing system has a genuine line requirement.
To count lines, paste or type the text and read the live Total lines value.
Use Non-empty lines when blank rows should be excluded, and check
Newline breaks when you need the underlying separator count rather than thenumber of resulting rows.
Count Text Lines Online
- Paste or type text into the input.
- Read the total, non-empty, and blank line counts.
- Compare total lines with newline breaks.
- Review the longest line and average non-empty line length.
- Add an optional target, copy the text, or clear the input.
Every measurement updates locally in the current browser tab. The tool does not rewrite or grade the text.
How the Line Count Is Calculated
When the input contains text, total lines equal the number of newline boundaries plus one. An empty input contains zero lines. This definition makes the relationship explicit:
| Input | Newline breaks | Total lines |
|---|---|---|
| Empty input | 0 | 0 |
Alpha | 0 | 1 |
Alpha↵Beta | 1 | 2 |
Alpha↵ | 1 | 2 |
Alpha↵↵Beta | 2 | 3 |
The final example contains one blank line between two non-empty lines. A trailing newline creates a final blank line because there is an empty row after the boundary.
The tool recognizes the common line-ending conventions used by current and older systems: line feed, carriage return plus line feed, and standalone carriage return. It normalizes those boundaries for counting without changing the pasted text.
Total Lines vs Non-Empty Lines
Total lines include every row represented in the text, including blank rows. Non-empty lines contain at least one visible non-whitespace character after trimming. A row made only from spaces or tabs therefore counts as a blank line.
This distinction matters for lists and structured text. Two files can have the same total line count but different information density:
- a compact list might contain 20 non-empty lines and no blank rows;
- a spaced outline might contain 20 non-empty lines and 19 blank rows;
- a copied template might contain hidden whitespace on rows that look empty.
The separate totals help you diagnose the structure instead of reducing every line to the same category.
Newline Counter vs Visual Wrapping
A newline is part of the underlying text. Visual wrapping is only how an editor displays a long row when it reaches the edge of the window.
If one long sentence wraps across four visible rows in a narrow text box, it still counts as one line unless the text contains newline characters. Widening or narrowing the browser window does not change the total.
This is why a browser line counter may differ from a printed page or word processor display. Page width, font, zoom, margins, and layout can change visible wrapping without changing the stored text.
Use this utility when you need logical text rows. Use the final publishing application when the requirement refers to visual or printed lines.
What the Line Statistics Mean
| Measurement | Calculation | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Total lines | Newline-separated rows when text is present | Checking an exact row requirement |
| Non-empty lines | Rows containing non-whitespace text | Measuring populated entries |
| Blank lines | Total minus non-empty lines | Finding spacing and separators |
| Line breaks | Number of newline boundaries | Comparing boundary and row semantics |
| Longest line | Highest Unicode code-point count in one row | Finding unusually wide records |
| Average characters | Characters across non-empty rows divided by populated rows | Comparing line-density patterns |
| Words | Locale-aware word-like segments when supported | Relating rows to prose length |
| Characters | Unicode code points across the complete input | Checking overall text size |
The measurements describe structure. They do not determine whether a line is correct, readable, valid data, or appropriately formatted.
Line Counter vs Paragraph Counter
A paragraph counter groups non-empty text blocks separated by blank lines. A line counter treats each explicit newline as a boundary.
Consider this text:
First row
Second row
>
Fourth row
It contains four total lines, three non-empty lines, one blank line, and two paragraph blocks under this site’s blank-line paragraph definition.
Use the line counter for lists, row-oriented text, transcripts, subtitle drafts, pasted records, or exact newline requirements. Use the paragraph counter for prose structure and block distribution.
Line Counter vs Word and Character Counters
The word counter measures language units and estimates reading or speaking time. The character counter distinguishes visible graphemes, code points, UTF-16 units, and UTF-8 bytes.
The line counter focuses on boundaries between rows. It also includes basic word and character totals for context, but the dedicated tools provide deeper measurements for those units.
Choose the owner that matches the requirement:
- line counter for explicit text rows;
- paragraph counter for blank-line-separated blocks;
- sentence counter for sentence boundaries and sentence length;
- word counter for overall language length;
- character counter for Unicode and technical storage distinctions.
This separation prevents several different search intents from collapsing into one vague page.
Line Endings and Cross-Platform Text
Modern Unix-like systems generally use a line-feed character. Windows commonly uses a carriage-return and line-feed pair. Older content can contain standalone carriage returns.
This tool treats each recognized convention as one boundary. A Windows pair is not double-counted. The character total still reflects the complete text, while line totals use normalized boundary semantics.
Pasting text can change line endings because the browser and operating system may normalize clipboard content. If byte-for-byte preservation matters, inspect the source with a dedicated file or development tool. This page analyzes the text present in the box.
Using a Line Target
Enter a positive target to see:
- lines remaining;
- percentage progress;
- confirmation when the target is reached;
- lines over the target.
A target can help with a fixed list, narration layout, subtitle draft, form export, or another explicit specification. It should not become an arbitrary writing rule. Prose quality depends on meaning and organization, not the number of manual breaks.
Privacy and Limitations
The counter runs entirely in the browser tab. It does not transmit the supplied text to Humanizer PRO. Clear the input after use on a shared device.
Important limitations:
- it analyzes pasted or typed plain text;
- visual wrapping does not count as a boundary;
- clipboard normalization can change original line endings;
- whitespace-only rows count as blank;
- character lengths use Unicode code points rather than visible grapheme clusters;
- it does not inspect folders, repositories, document layouts, or spreadsheet rows;
- it does not validate syntax, grammar, facts, citations, or data formats.
Verify the final material in its destination application when compliance depends on that application’s own definition of a line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this line counter free?
Yes. It is free, requires no account, and processes text in the current browser tab.
Does it save my text?
No. The counter does not upload or save the supplied text.
Does an empty input have one line?
No. This utility reports zero lines for an empty input. Once text exists, total lines equal newline breaks plus one.
Does a trailing newline create another line?
Yes. A trailing boundary creates a final empty row, so Alpha has one line while Alpha followed by a newline has two.
Are whitespace-only rows blank?
Yes. Rows containing only spaces or tabs are included in total lines and classified as blank.
Does text wrapping create extra lines?
No. Wrapping caused by screen width is visual. Only newline characters create counted boundaries.
Why does another editor show a different total?
It may count visual rows, ignore a trailing empty row, classify whitespace differently, or normalize copied boundaries. Compare the definitions before treating either total as wrong.
Can I count paragraphs instead?
Yes. Use the paragraph counter when blank-line-separated prose blocks are the relevant unit.
Count the Rows, Then Check the Destination
Use this line counter to inspect the exact plain text present in the browser. If the final requirement belongs to another editor or publishing system, confirm the result there as well.
